What is Executive Functioning?

Executive functioning refers to a set of mental skills that help us plan, focus, remember instructions, manage time, regulate emotions, and shift between tasks. These skills are like the brain’s management system—helping us organize our actions, thoughts, and goals in real time. Neurodivergent individuals tend to experience executive function differently, which can lead to challenges with starting or finishing tasks, keeping track of time or materials, switching focus between activities, and regulating big emotions during learning or transitions.

How it Works

Here are the simple steps for completing the EFA:

  1. Apply to get started.
  2. Fill out the assessment. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
    • For children, parent/guardians complete a parent-report form. A teacher that has worked with the child for at least six months can complete a teacher-report form. (Both the parent/guardian and the teacher can fill out two separate forms for an additional fee.)
    • Adults complete a self-report form. Another adult (spouse, family member, etc.) can complete an observer-report form. (Both the adult and the observer can fill out two separate forms for an additional fee.)
  3. Submit the Assessment. The digital assessment will automatically be submitted online once you have completed it. If you have completed a paper copy, please drop it off at our East Vancouver Learning Centre.
  4. Attend a Debrief Session. A member of our team will contact you to schedule a debrief session in which you will walk through the results of your or your child’s report.

Cost

The EFA package includes the assessment, scoring, a comprehensive report, and a debrief session with a qualified professional.

  • The total cost is $120.
  • There is an additional $10 fee for additional forms (e.g., teacher-report form, observer-report form).
  • This amount will be billed when you are given your assessment to complete. Payment is required prior to receiving the assessment. Once your invoice is paid, a member of the team will provide you with your Executive Functioning Assessment.
  • We fundraise tirelessly to be able to offer a generous sliding scale for all our programs. For the EFA, we are pleased to provide this assessment at $60 for individuals with a household annual net income of less than $120,000.
  • The EFA is an additional assessment not currently included in other RISE programs. The cost is in addition to other program fees.
