Why Summer Tutoring Is the Best Time to Start Learning Support

Summer tutoring programs are often seen as optional, but they can be one of the most powerful ways to support your child’s learning. At LDS – Learn. Develop. Succeed., our summer tutoring program gives families the opportunity to build skills, boost confidence, and explore individualized learning support before the school year begins.

Unlike the busy pace of September to June, summer provides space. With fewer classroom pressures, students can slow down, focus on specific learning needs, and rebuild confidence in a low-stress environment.

Our Summer Tutoring program offers one-to-one support for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12, available live online across BC or in-person at our East Vancouver and North Vancouver learning centres. Sessions are twice per week, between 9:00 AM and 5:50 PM, during July, August, or both months.

Why Summer Tutoring Works

During the school year, students often try to keep up. In the summer, they can focus on moving forward.

This shift creates opportunities for meaningful progress:

  • Strengthening reading and writing skills
  • Building math foundations
  • Developing executive functioning and learning strategies
  • Growing confidence through success

With individualized, evidence-informed instruction, students can make progress at their own pace while focusing on what matters most to them.

A Low-Pressure Way to Try Tutoring

Summer tutoring is also an ideal “trial run” for families exploring the right support.

At Learn. Develop. Succeed., students work one-to-one with experienced, specialized instructors who are carefully matched to their learning needs.

This gives families the opportunity to:

  • Get to know our instructors and teaching approach
  • Experience individualized, neuroaffirming support
  • Understand what ongoing learning support could look like

All without a long-term commitment.

It’s a chance to see how the right environment, one that is responsive, strengths-based, and personalized, can make a meaningful difference.

How Summer Tutoring Prepares Students for September

Many families find that summer tutoring makes the transition into the school year smoother.

Students often begin September:

  • More prepared academically
  • More confident in their abilities
  • Equipped with strategies that support independent learning
  • Already connected to a trusted educator and supportive environment

Summer learning can also help prevent the “summer slide,” where students lose some of the skills they developed during the school year.

Parents gain valuable insight into their child’s learning needs and what types of support are most effective moving forward.

Is Summer Tutoring Right for Your Child?

Summer tutoring can be a great fit if your child:

  • Needs targeted support in literacy or math
  • Would benefit from building confidence with learning
  • Feels overwhelmed during the school year
  • Is a neurodivergent learner who thrives with individualized support
  • Is preparing for a smoother transition into the next grade

Whether you’re looking for short-term support or exploring longer-term options, summer is a flexible and supportive place to begin.

Frequently Asked Questions About Summer Tutoring

Is summer tutoring worth it?

Yes. Summer tutoring helps students maintain and build skills, preventing learning loss and increasing confidence before the new school year.

How often should my child attend tutoring in the summer?

Students attend two sessions per week, which provides consistent support while still allowing time for rest and summer activities.

Can tutoring help with confidence, not just academics?

Absolutely. A key benefit of summer tutoring is the opportunity to learn in a low-pressure environment where students can experience success and build confidence.
