What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy supports anyone who has difficulty participating in an “occupation”. This does not mean “going to work,” but refers to any activity a person chooses to do. It might include daily activities that people need to do for self-care like dressing, eating, or going to the bathroom. It can also include activities related to productivity, such as completing schoolwork, and leisure activities, like personal hobbies, or playing sports.

In other words – if there is something you need to or want to do, and you are having difficulty doing it – occupational therapists can help support you!

OT Assessments

Our OT assessments help identify your child’s unique strengths and challenges in sensory processing.

Sensory Processing Assessment builds a detailed sensory profile to understand preferences, aversions (e.g., clothing, food), and self-regulation needs.

Who It’s For

OT Assessments are ideal for children who:

  • Have a learning or brain-based difference (diagnosed or suspected)
  • Face challenges with self-care or play
  • Show signs of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
  • Need support understanding their sensory world

How It Works

  • Assessment: 1.5-hour in-person session
  • Follow-Up: Written report and debrief with insights and next steps

OT in Our Programs

We also offer OT services in Early RISErs, a unique early learning program with parent or guardian participation that brings families and early childhood specialists together for a time of play, connection, and learning.

Master of Occupational Therapy Students

We are grateful for the opportunity to provide practicum experience for UBC Master of Occupational Therapy students. We have done this for several years, enhancing our programs and student learning.

These UBC students support our Eary RISErs program and our Social Communication Group programs bringing their energy and skills in service of our learners. They also identify learners from these programs who may benefit from assessments with them.

They also can support instructors and learners in one-to-one sessions with observations and recommendations for adaptations and modifications that improve engagement and promote self-regulation.

Fees and Funding

Fees

OT assessments are offered on a sliding scale to make them accessible to all families. Fees start at $600; however, for families with a verified annual household income below $120,000, fees are reduced to $60.

Autism Funding Unit

You may submit a Request to Pay to the Autism Funding Unit to cover your fees. Please contact AFU for further details.
