CHEQ Report Demonstrates Need for Systematic Change and Early Years Reform

The Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) has released the 2024-2025 Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (CHEQ) reports, summarizing data from over 4,800 parents and caregivers across 21 participating school districts about children’s early experiences and contexts prior to starting school.

Marlo Humiski, LDS’ Senior Manager, Early Years Programs, comments on the key findings of this year’s reports:

“It’s crucial that family voices and experiences are centralized in early childhood reform. The 2024 CHEQ report highlights how availability and waitlists continue to be the most significant barriers for children to receive the quality care and services needed for healthy development. Whether that’s consistent childcare or accessing pivotal intervention services, families are stuck waiting during the most crucial time of their child’s development. Even when families are proactive with getting their child onto the lists, it’s very common for the child to “age out” of these waitlists and services before receiving support. The CHEQ report demonstrates BC’s ongoing need for systematic change and early years reform.
