Experts Warn of Summer Learning Loss—Tutoring Helps Neurodivergent Students Stay on Track

VANCOUVER — May 4, 2026 — As families plan for the months ahead, education experts are raising concerns about the “summer slide”—a well-documented loss of academic skills during extended school breaks. Research suggests students can lose up to 40% of their learning gains over the summer (Atteberry & McEachin, 2020), making consistent, meaningful learning support more important than ever.

But for many neurodivergent learners, the impact goes beyond academics. Summer can interrupt routines, confidence, and the positive momentum students have worked hard to build during the school year.

Some experts in neuroaffirming education are working to change that.

Learn. Develop. Succeed. has opened applications for its Summer Tutoring Program, designed not just to maintain academic skills, but to help students rebuild confidence, strengthen their relationship with learning, and continue progressing in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

“Summer isn’t just about preventing loss; it’s an opportunity to reset how students feel about learning,” says Rachel Forbes, Executive Director. “When students feel supported and successful, they stay engaged, and that confidence carries forward into the next school year.”

Unlike traditional tutoring models focused on remediation, the program emphasizes:

  • Strength-based, neuroaffirming instruction
  • Flexible, personalized learning plans
  • A positive, supportive learning environment
  • Sustaining confidence and motivation alongside academic growth

For many families, the impact is immediate and lasting:

One parent of an 11-year-old Summer Tutoring learner shared, “What a great resource! Our instructor is amazing. She explains in different ways, checks in often for understanding, shows lots of interest and patience, as well as providing lots of mini breaks. My child is ready for back to school thanks to this summer program.”

For students who may struggle during the school year, summer can be a powerful turning point.

“When learning feels positive, students begin to see themselves differently,” Rachel Forbes adds. “They’re not just catching up, they’re building confidence, gaining independence, and developing a sense of ‘I can do this.’”

The program is open to K–12 students with suspected or diagnosed learning differences (dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, ASD and more) and offers both in-person and online options, making it accessible to families across the Lower Mainland. With limited spots available, families are encouraged to apply early to secure a space and support a more confident return to school in September.
