Neuroaffirming Approach

What Does it Mean to be Neuroaffirming?

Before defining a neuroaffirming approach, it is important to understand neurodiversity and the neurodiversity movement.

Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity is the differences within the human brain related to how we think, feel, and act, connected to different brain types, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological conditions.

The Neurodiversity Movement

The neurodiversity movement is a social and civil rights action that promotes the acceptance of neurological differences as a natural part of the human experience instead of deficits or disorders that need to be “fixed.”

Neuroaffirming Approach

A neuroaffirming approach reduces stigma and promotes understanding and acceptance. It reduces barriers and empowers neurodivergent individuals to express themselves fully and connect with others who share similar experiences. It is a lasting commitment to learning, change, and equity.

Our mission is to empower all neurodivergent children, youth, and adults to recognize their unique strengths and develop the tools to achieve lifelong independence, confidence, and success.

Our core operations and values are deeply grounded in neuroaffirming principles. We have created and committed to a neuroaffirming approach framework, which allows us to reflect, adapt, and improve to encourage a cultural shift toward supporting neurodivergent individuals.

Our Neuroaffirming Approach Framework

Our neuroaffirming approach framework is based on six principles.

  1. Neurodivergence is a valued asset to our organization, community, and society.
  2. Advocacy, empowerment, and inclusive support are essential in all of society.
  3. Challenging stigma and societal norms redefine neurodivergence as an asset.
  4. Honouring neurodivergent identities supports acceptance and compassion.
  5. Integrating research, lived experience, and shared knowledge is foundational.
  6. Transparency, accountability, and organizational commitment builds trust.

These principles not only guide our interactions with neurodivergent individuals but also serve as a call to action to inspire a mindset shift, including neuroaffirming values in every aspect of our community and greater society. As a team, we are evaluating our current progress in each of these areas and creating action plans to build a more supportive and equitable environment.

At its heart, a neuroaffirming approach is about transforming the way society views and supports neurodivergent individuals. Leading with a neuroaffirming approach is an ongoing commitment to creating environments where neurodivergent individuals are celebrated, supported, and empowered to thrive. It is an evolving practice that requires organizations to remain transparent, accountable, and adaptable in the face of new insights, lived experiences, and societal shifts.

Together, we can drive systemic change and create a world where neurodivergent individuals are supported and celebrated for the unique perspectives and strengths they bring to every space they enter.

We believe that every individual should be empowered to achieve greatness their way.
