Research Assistant

Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, BC Certified Teacher, Oregon State Certified Teacher, Masters of Arts in Supporting Inclusive Education in Progress

Lys (they/them) is a Master of Arts student in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education at the University of British Columbia, concentrating on Inclusive Education. Their research focuses on the role of Education Assistants (EAs) in British Columbia, with an interest in mobilizing research-based inclusive practices in service delivery.

Lys brings experience as a classroom teacher and childcare worker in the United States and Japan, having taught in public schools across elementary and junior high school settings. They currently support the Networks of Inquiry and Indigenous Education (NOIIE) as a research assistant, contributing to the development of a self-regulated learning resource for teachers. Lys is also part of a team of inclusive educators implementing the Three Block Model of Universal Design for Learning in BC, where they support professional development, monitor school-based progress, and collaborate with international partners to advance inclusive education.

Outside of work, Lys enjoys walking along Vancouver’s seawall, watching movies, and volunteering at local festivals. They also like to crochet—especially oversized blankets—because nobody notices if you miss a stitch or two!
