This summer the Learning Disabilities Society is hosting our inaugural RISE Summer Camps. Our customized and creative week-long Vancouver summer camps will focus on helping students with learning disabilities develop new skills through fun, hands-on camp programs with high instructor and camp counsellor to camper ratio. All of our Vancouver summer camps are designed around two themes:

Tell Your Story

Your child will get creative and explore the many exciting ways to tell stories through written word, oral histories, plays, graphic novels, poetry, and more. Each camper will work closely with our language team to learn the skills to create their own story to share and publish with the group at the end of the week!

Discover Your World

Your child will develop and use various detective skills to solve all sorts of problems, including puzzles, math games, outdoor scavenger hunts, and more. Campers will work as a team to investigate the world around us.

Why are LDS RISE Summer Camps the best choice for you and your child?

Our Vancouver summer camp programming follows the same high standards as our tried and tested one-to-one instruction. Our Research-Informed Individualized Student Education (RISE) program focuses on drawing from collective expertise to customize a program that is right for your child, wherever they are in their learning journey. We are applying these standards within our Vancouver summer camp programs, where each group will be no larger than eight (8) students, and every day will include one-to-one or one-to-two (if appropriate) focused instruction time.

The customized programming of our RISE & Tell and RISE & Solve summer camps will respond to the campers’ individual student intake assessments and will include key learning principles for students with suspected or diagnosed learning disabilities in:

  • reading, processing, writing, written expression;
  • mathematics, computation and problem solving; and
  • executive functioning / self-regulation, organizational and time management skills

Each day will include fun indoor and outdoor activities to build on the summer camp themes and encourage teamwork, social skills, outdoor exploration, and games. Every student will receive approximately 30-60 minutes of daily individual LDS instruction that will provide focused assistance on projects taking place within the summer camp (e.g. writing tasks).

Both group and individual instruction will be provided by LDS instructors who have specific training and many years of experience in tutoring and remedial education for children with learning disabilities. Additional supervision and guidance will be provided by at least two other trained camp leaders per summer camp who will assist with group activities and lead the group during times of break-out one-to-one instruction. All Vancouver summer camp leaders will have first aid training.

Who should apply to attend?

Students from approximately grades 3 to 5 are the best fit for our RISE summer camps.

If you’re not sure of an age or ability fit, please get in touch and we can help you decide if your child is a good camper candidate.

Non-LDS students will need to complete an intake assessment. Once approved, you can secure their spot in the summer camp by making a deposit.

Where do camps take place?

Both summer camp themes will be offered out of our East Van and North Van locations.

In East Vancouver, summer camps will be held at our Learning Centre at 3292 East Broadway and Rupert and use surrounding green and parkway space.

In North Vancouver, summer camps will be based out of Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School and use surrounding playgrounds, parks, and natural spaces.

When do camps run?

Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:00pm. Drop-off begins at 8:00am. For an additional cost, either late pick-up (5:00pm) or additional one-to-one instruction time from 4:00pm onwards is available.

Summer camps will run during the following weeks:
